Öğe Can Energy Efficiency Help in Achieving Carbon-Neutrality Pledges? Emran; Rej, Soumen; Saha, Sourav Mohan; Onwe, Joshua Chukwuma; Nwulu, Nnamdi; Bekun, Festus Victor; Taha, AmjadThe current research sheds light on the nexus between environmental degradation as proxied by carbon dioxide emissions (CO2 ), energy efficiency (EE), economic growth, manufacturing value-added (MVA), and the interaction effect of EE and MVA in India. Using yearly data from 1980 to 2019, the current study employs dynamic auto-regressive distribution lag (DARDL) simulations and Fourier Toda and Yamamoto causality techniques. The findings of DARDL reveal that as income and MVA rise, environmental quality decreases, while EE improves environmental conditions in both the long and short run. Surprisingly, the interaction term of EE and MVA has a detrimental influence on environmental quality, meaning that India remains unable to provide energy savings technologies to the manufacturing industry. Furthermore, the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis is well-founded for India, as the long-run income coefficient is smaller than the short-run coefficient, implying that India is in its scale stage of economy, where economic growth is prioritized over environmental quality. The results of the causality technique reveal that CO2 emissions and EE have a bidirectional association. Therefore, policymakers in India should embrace realistic industrialization strategies combined with moderate decarbonization and energy efficiency initiatives under the umbrella of sustainable industrial and economic growth.Öğe Do energy-pollution-resource-transport taxes yield double dividend for Nordic economies?(PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD, THE BOULEVARD, LANGFORD LANE, KIDLINGTON, OXFORD OX5 1GB, ENGLAND, 2022) Alola, Andrew Adewale; Nwulu, NnamdiWith the policy performance of the Nordic countries especially from the aspects of energy security, energy equity, and environmental sustainability, this study provides more in-depth on the performance of the countries’ disaggregated environmental taxes. To examine the greenhouse gas emission and energy intensity effects of energy tax, pollution tax, resource tax, and transport tax alongside controlling for the role of employment rate and gross domestic product over the period 1995e2020, empirical tools such as the method of moments quantile regression, short- and long-run cointegration, and Granger causality approaches were utilized. Importantly, there are series of interesting results from this investigation. Firstly, the result posits the feasibility of Green growth in the panel of Nordic countries while a significant and negative nexus between GDP and energy intensity was also established. Secondly, also from the panel result, we found that only energy tax significantly mitigates both emissions and energy intensity across the quantiles while pollution tax and resource tax exacerbate emissions and energy intensity. Thus, for the panel case, only energy tax could validate the double dividend hypothesis. Thirdly, the result revealed that double dividend hypothesis and by large extent co-benefit is achievable with pollution and resource tax policies in Finland but in the short-run. Similarly, pollution, resource, and transport tax policies in Sweden are all desirable for achieving both environmental and economic benefits in the short-run. However, there is no valid evidence to support the validity of double dividend hypothesis in Denmark and Norway. Lastly, we found a one-way Granger causality from GDP, energy tax, resource tax, and transport tax to greenhouse gas emission while a one-way Granger causality also exists from GDP, energy tax, and transport tax to energy intensity. Overall, compelling policy dimensions are inferred from the investigation.Öğe Environmental degradation, energy consumption and sustainable development: Accounting for the role of economic complexities with evidence from World Bank income clusters(WILEY, 111 RIVER ST, HOBOKEN 07030-5774, NJ, 2021) Adedoyin, Festus Fatai; Nwulu, Nnamdi; Bekun, Festus VictorThe anthropogenic consequences of renewable and non-renewable energy consumption, economic growth, and air transport have been assessed enormously in the literature. However, given the complexities in many economies of the world today, it is important to reassess the ecological concerns of these factors in light of the Environmental Kuznets Curve framework. Therefore, this current study investigates the global assessment using data from World Bank Development database from 1995 to 2016. Evidence from the method employed, sys-GMM, revealed that the economic complexities index increases the carbon emission in low-income groups while it significantly decreases the carbon emission for upper-middle and highincome groups. For the combined group, the EKC hypothesis holds, and ECI significantly hampers carbon emissions. For the other variables, it is worthy of note that (1) economic growth contributes to the high carbon contents across the income group especially for low-income, upper-middle-income and high-income group; (2) the effects of air transport on carbon emission is positive for lower-middle-income and high-income group and negative for the upper-middle-income group; (3) the use of coal rents and energy use leads to high release of carbon contents across all the income groups; and (4) a significant increase in the utilization of energy leads to increase in carbon contents except for lower-income group, it leads to a decrease. From this empirical assessment, vital energy policy directions are suggested.
