Öğe Istanbul Gelisim University Faculty of Health Sciences: Monthly Events and News Bulletin (Volume: 4, Issue: 39, March 2024)(İstanbul Gelişim Üniversitesi / Istanbul Gelisim University, 2024) Istanbul Gelisim University Faculty of Health SciencesAşık Veysel Memorial Concert and Conference Held On March 19, 2024, at 14:00, the event titled “Aşık Veysel Memorial Concert and Conference” was held at the Mehmet Akif Ersoy conference hall by the Istanbul Gelişim University Faculty of Health Sciences, Departments of Audiology and Health Management, and the İGÜ Youth Choir. The speaker of the event, Nazender Süzer Gökçe, is the grandson of Aşık Veysel. During the event, Nazender Süzer Gökçe shared information about Aşık Veysel's life. Aşık Veysel's art is one of the most precious examples of folk poetry tradition. He wrote poems that touched people's hearts using simple, sincere, and heartfelt language. His works express the joys, sorrows, loves, and hopes experienced among the people, reflecting the common feelings of the Turkish nation. Aşık Veysel's art shines not only in his poems but also in his ability to play the saz (a Turkish musical instrument). Being a master of saz playing as well, Veysel performed many of his works accompanied by this instrument. The event began with a speech by Asst. Prof. Nurten ELKİN, the Coordinator of Addiction Prevention and the Head of the Department of Child Development at Istanbul Gelisim University. Elkin addressed topics related to materials, sustainability, and health, then handed over the floor to the implementer of the event, Lecturer Bedriye Çelik KANCAa. Çelik Kanca emphasized that especially child development students do not receive training on any developmental assessment tools during their courses and face significant challenges when they enter the field. As part of the visit, representatives from the children's home complex provided a general introduction of the institution to the students. During the introduction, detailed information was shared about the institution's operations, admission criteria, and the services offered to children. Leprosy has historically been more than just a disease; it has also symbolized social exclusion and stigma. Examined by various disciplines in the literature, leprosy has become an increasingly prominent subject of research since the 1980s. Within this framework, an event titled A Disease in the Shadow of Stigma: Leprosy, Hello to Life! was organized in collaboration with the Departments of Social Work, Nursing, and Orthotics-Prosthetics at the Faculty of Health Sciences, with the internal partnership of the Social Responsibility Application and Research Center, as well as the Social Work and Nursing Student Clubs. In his opening speech, Vice Dean Dr. Yüksel BARUT provided an assessment of the historical background of leprosy and emphasized the significance of Prof. Dr. Türkan Saylan’s dedicated efforts in this field.
